I met Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott back in August 2005. We were about to launch PokerPlayer and he was the only choice for our front cover. The photoshoot passed in a blur of one-liners and anecdotes.

The next time I spoke to him was a day after the mag was released. He’d phoned to say that he’d seen the mag and loved it – especially the front cover. He’d actually bumped into one of our life-size cardboard cut-outs of himself at an airport, and spent time signing autographs for people. They might have been unaware of who he was, but they were sure he was a star.

He didn’t need to phone. No one else we’ve put on the cover has since and we’re now on issue 119. But that was Dave. He might have had a spiky image, but underneath he was a good, kind man. He probably wouldn’t thank me for saying that though. He was also a poker legend, a one-of-a-kind who did more to get UK players into the game than anyone else.

Poker players have come and gone over the past ten years. They’ve enjoyed their time at the top and then bowed out, unable to keep pace. Devilfish was different. The game might have changed but he was one of the few old-school players that could still mix it. He came sixth in the 2013 EPT London High Roller and enjoyed a deep run in the Main Event, cut short by a bad beat.

Unfortunately his time with us was cut short too, and he died of cancer on April 6. Thankfully he was surrounded by his family – his one true source of happiness in a world that doesn’t offer many certainties. The game will miss him greatly.
