WSOP Daily Digest, June 17: Is Hoyt Corkins a monster?

‘Cowboy’ in the mix for third WSOP bracelet, plus more news

1. Watch the Monster Stack final table tonight

The plan was to play to a winner earlier but the WSOP quickly made the decision to play down to the final table instead. That gave the players a relatively easy day, with the final table bubble bursting in the early evening local time. Jeff Kaplan was the player who missed out, shoving his 10BB with K-T and running into Fernando Konishi’s A-K. It means Konishi will be the chip leader when play resumes today at the early time of 11am.

Only four US players make up the nine, with two Brazilians, two Canadians and Asi Moshe from Israel who is currently second in chips. Hoyt Corkins will be going for his third bracelet and you can watch him on the live stream, with hole cards, which will kick in with a 30-minute delay at 11.30am local time or 7.30pm UK time.

2. Tilly (nearly) on top

The $5k No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed is one of the most prestigious tournaments of the series and with 20 remaining there are lots of big names in the mix. They’re still playing and two players are currently sitting on over one million chips – Australia’s James Obst and Simon Deadman. They’re followed by Tuan Le (3rd), Jennifer Tilly (8th) and Jason Mercier (14th).

Play is in the last level of the evening and they’ll be back later today, although it may take an extra day to crown the winner.

3. Event #30: $1k No-Limit Hold’em – fatal four-way

Four players from four different nations are currently battling it out on the live stream for the $1k NLHE bracelet. ElkY and Chris Moorman just missed out on the final table, finishing 11th and 10th for cashes of $20,423.

Currently leading the way is Franco Ivan Luca from Argentina – he has 7m chips to Travis Case’s 2m. Pierre Horaud and Artur Rudziankov are both short stacks with around 10BBs. Tune in for the conclusion here.

4. Event #31: $3k Pot Limit Omaha

It’s normally the rowdy British rail that keeps security busy at the Rio. But tensions grew in the heads-up encounter between Jeff Madsen and Jeanmarc Thomas for the $3k PLO bracelet. The respective rails gathered behind their men and security have had to step in twice as the mood became increasingly partisan.

And it was the Americans who won out, with Madsen wearing Thomas down and eeventually securing the win and his fourth bracelet.

5. Hellmuth back on the HORSE, $10k 6-Handed starts today

The $3k H.O.R.S.E event is up and running, with 352 entries. Barry Greenstein currently has a top-ten stack, with Shaun Deeb and Phil Hellmuth slipstreaming with average stacks. Hellmuth will be hoping he can run this up for a tilt at his 15th bracelet.

Meanwhile, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the series kicks off later today. The $10k NLHE 6-Handed is the pro’s favourite and you can expect anyone who’s anyone to be playing. Main Event winner Joe Cada won it last year. The final table will be on the live stream on Friday.
