Novice wins WSOP seat

Live poker virgin scoops tournament and will go to the big one in Vegas

Rory McCague is more at home playing online poker than mixing it face-to-face at Canary Wharf in London. But in his first live poker experience he won a package worth $15,000 to July’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in Las Vegas.

Fifty City AM readers played in the Betfair Poker City Aces Challenge at the Poker Bunker. For those not involved in the game, there was the opportunity for a spot of golf in the state-of-the-art golf course simulators.

The tournament was the highlight of two months of online freerolls. In addition to the $15,000 seat, £3000 was distributed between the top-ten finishers.

Having made the final three, Rory fought back from a short-stacked position to take the main prize. Having to wait until the end of July to collect on his Las Vegas win, he was handed the City Aces Cup by guest player and ex-England football star Trevor Steven.

McCague who is 31 was not expecting the win: “It’s brilliant, I only came down for the experience and to make sure I didn’t go out first. Now I’m off to the biggest poker event in the world.”

Betfair Poker’s Ben Fried said: “It’s great that an inexperienced player won the seat to Vegas. Congratulations to Rory- he’s a great guy and we look forward to him representing Team Betfair this summer.”
