Breaking: Daniel Negreanu is 2013 WSOP Player of the Year

Polarising pro wins the coveted award for second time at this year’s WSOPE

The WSOPE High Roller final table is currently playing out and you can watch a live stream by clicking here. We’re still waiting for the first bustout but one thing that has already been settled is this year’s highly competitive race to Player of the Year. Negreanu needed to finish 8th to become the first player to win it for the second time, after he won his first in 2004. He did this when Joni Jouhkimainen was eliminated in ninth. Despite being the short stack at the table, Negreanu was delighted with his PoY and tweeted:

‘I DID IT!!! WSOP PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR THE SECOND TIME!! AHHHH I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’

It means that Negreanu has pipped UK Pro Matt Ashton to the 2013 Player of the Year award, after Ashton won the $50k Poker Players Championship.

Meanwhile, we’re waiting to see if Negreanu can spin his short stack up to be a threat in the high roller. He’s off to a good start after doubling through Erik Seidel with Ac-Jc against K-J. A King on the flop looked to have tipped things Seidel’s way until closer inspection showed Negreanu had flopped the nut flush.

Check back for a report on the final table tomorrow.
