Large turnout for GUKPT Cardiff, won by Vaidas Sirionas

Vaidas Sirionas, from Lithuania via Bristol, captures his first GUKPT Title in Cardiff and the PokerPlayer Tour teams up with Goliath

PokerPlayer Tour partners, and the UK’s leading poker tournament series, Grosvenor Casinos’ GUKPT tour made a triumphant return to the Welsh capital last week after a four year break. 177 players entered the £550 buy-in Main Event including many local players and a strong team of qualifiers from the Grosvenor G Casino in Cardiff. July is always an extremely busy time on the poker calendar, often meaning great value for players in the form of overlays. Grosvenor Casinos guarantee the prizepool in each GUKPT main event, regardless of the time of year, and as such all Main Event players in Cardiff enjoyed £11,500 of added value.

Despite the strong Welsh contingent, nearly half of the £100,000 guaranteed prizepool made its way back to the West Coast. Eventual winner Vaidas Sirionas, originally from Lithuania but now residing in Bristol, and runner up Mick Corrigan from Cheltenham, agreed a deal when heads up to split the remaining prizepool and took home a mouth-watering £24,000 a piece.

Sirionas and Corrigan became friends after meeting in their local Bristol Casino and even travelled to Cardiff together. The pair are regular fixtures on both the Grosvenor Casinos’ GUKPT and 25/25 Series tours and it was only last week that both players reached the 25/25 Series final table in Walsall which Corrigan went on to win. Sirionas has also been on an incredible run, winning both April’s 25/25 Series Main Event in Leicester and then the very next Main Event in Bournemouth as well! After making the final table yet again at the next leg in Walsall, unfortunately he was unable to seal his third consecutive win after being knocked out in 8th place by, would you believe it…Mick Corrigan!
