Formula One 21/09: Why it will be lights out for Lewis Hamilton in Singapore

Formula One’s night race to damage Brit’s Drivers’ Championship prospects

Lewis Hamilton and his backers believe that he has the momentum after winning in Italy, but Nico Rosberg still boasts a far weightier 22-point lead despite gifting his Mercedes’ teammate seven in Monza. To apply context, the German – who has finished outside the top two twice all season – can finish second to Hamilton at the next three races and still boast the Drivers’ Championship lead, so it is baffling that the Brit is the 4/5 title favourite with Coral to Rosberg’s evens. There are two strong reasons to suspect that the pantomime villain of this enthralling campaign won’t even need to worry about second place in race 14 of 19.

The first is his superiority on Singapore’s street circuit. Hamilton hasn’t finished higher than fifth there since his 2009 triumph, retiring twice, with Rosberg outperforming him at three of the four editions this decade.

The second is that Rosberg hasn’t ceded ground to Hamilton at successive races since the Spanish Grand Prix, which was the fifth of the season.

Every time since then that the former McLaren man has started to believe he is back in contention, his rival has shut him down, most notably following his previous victory at Silverstone, striking back with a win of his own in Germany.

BetVictor have Hamilton as the 4/5 frontrunner and Rosberg a remarkable 15/8 to take the chequered flag.
